It appears to me that the backup file contains all the info that one sees in the "other wordpress news" section of the wp dashboard. It's like the backup plugin is following and processing those external links.
Yes it contains the info; no it doesn't follow any external links.
All the RSS feeds in WordPress, such as those you see on the Dashboard, or those you might have in a sidebar widget, are cached by WordPress in the database. So that cached information gets backed up along with everything else.

right! So that why I'm seeing within the backup file multiple entries of lines like:
