I'll file support request with host (sigh).

It has to do with the file permissions or ownership on your server. The backup plugin creates files as whatever user PHP acts as, and it may be that your FTP user doesn't have permission to modify the PHP user's files, although that would be unusual.

Since this is a problem particular to a given server configuration, you should ask your host about it.

Any tips on how to delete backups which end up on server after using your plugin? Apparently the file and folder your software creates has some kind of tricky setting that doesn't let one just go in there with FTP and get rid of it... why is that, and how does one go about getting rid of the pesky things?

The problem occurs if I access the administration page via a secure connection (https://mysite.com/wp-admin/edit.php?page=wp-db-backup). If I open the backup screen without the secure connection (just plain ole http://...), then everything works fine.

My guess is that there's something unusual about your admin area's URL. From the error, it sounds like Firefox thinks the iframe created by the plugin is in a different domain from the admin area.

If the URL "WordPress address (URL):" under Options > General is different from the beginning of the URL that appears in Firefox's navigation toolbar, that would be the problem.

I tried disabling all add-ons, and that didn't solve the problem. However, checking the Firefox error console, I get the following error after I click the Backup button.

"uncaught exception: Permission denied to get property Window.setProgress"

And really, more thanks to you for writing and helping out with the plugin!

Do you have any Firefox add-ons that might be causing a problem? (Perhaps something like an ad blocker, or something to do with JavaScript development).

Does the Firefox error console report any errors or warnings when you attempt to make the backup?

I tried the suggestions in the FAQ without any better results. I even tried increasing the delay from 500 to 2500 and had the same result.

I've tried the backup on a different computer running Firefox, and it still fails. I also ran Firefox in Safe Mode, to see if some add-in was causing the problem. Again, no luck.

Again, Internet Explorer runs the backup just fine. Strange!

quasimagyar, can you give me some more details? What happens after you push the “Backup!” button? Do you see the progress bar at all? Does it just stop part-way? Or what?

When I click the Backup! button, the Progress screen appears; however, the progress bar doesn't move (in other words, it remains completely white). Basically, nothing happens.

Quick update.

I've discovered that the plug-in works fine with Internet Explorer 7, but fails with Firefox (2.0.0.7).

I realize that this thread has been dead for many months, but I recently upgraded to Wordpress 2.3 and also upgrade to WP-DB-Backup 2.1.3. Now, my backups no longer work. First, the SQL file that gets created is empty (as shown below). As well, the option "Download to your computer" no longer works. I don't get asked to save the file, though it appears in the correct directory on my server.

I would make automatic backups to see if this solves the problem, but unfortunately, e-mail doesn't work either (though this is unrelated to the plug-in, I think).

Are there any solutions for the manual backup option?

Correction: I overlooked GMail collecting mails with a same subject. The hourly backups were all under one title/message.
So that's OK. Automatic backup is working now and gives good backups (I hope ;)), but each of the possible manual backups is still broken.

Deactived/removed all the old Cron files. Updated the settings by clicking 'submit' under Scheduled Backup. Settings were on hourly for testing purposes, but nothing happens. No backup is made or sent. Manual backups are still broken.

Oh, and the prefix is 201 yes. See the link in one of my previous replies were I asked if these settings are correct when making a manual backup through phpmyadmin.

Try de-activating the old wp-cron plugin, then re-save your settings under Manage > Backup.

WordPress 2.1+ includes a built-in cron feature that this plugin uses.

I'm not sure what you mean by removing the 201 in your table prefix. Is "201" part of your tables' prefixes?

Something else about this forum: when I look at this page I can see 5 posts. Once I login I can see 7 (now 8) posts...?

Strange, even when I use the option 'hourly', no backup is created or sent to my gmail account.

I must say I still have WP-Cron activated as a seperate plugin and just read that it is obsolete in WP 2.1? Do I have to remove it and is everything done by your plugin now?

Oh, and just one more thing... Can I remove the 201 in the table prefix? Is it enough to remove this from the main tablenames and then change the prefix in the config.php?

I'm using the latest version of the plugin, 2.1.1, but the problem already occured in all previous versions.

The bar reaches 100% with no error messages and the message 'backup complete'. The result is a file (when extracted) of only 500kb. Should be three times this size.

The file is just broken somewhere in the middle. In this case the last two lines are:

Also I just noticed that my google account isn't receiving any daily backups anymore while I have this option selected in the options menu. When I hit 'update options' it will send the daily backup once but not again. ???

When you backup manually, does the progress bar reach 100%? Do you see any error messages? How does the sql file end? Any error messages in it?

Any news on this topic? I'm still experiencing the same problems:

From the admin menu in WordPress:
Not one of the options available will give me a solid backup when performed manually. That is, choosing the backup button and hitting 'backup'. Not by mail, not on the server, not by downloading!
They all result in broken sql-files when unzipped: about 460kb instead of the needed 1700kb!
The only thing that works is the scheduled backup to my gmail account. Those files, when downloaded, give me a good sql file.

Someone who knows why this is so? Sometimes after a lot of work I want to make a manual backup. I can ofcourse by using phpmyadmin, but I'd rather use the plugin.

Same problem here (I guess): Manually created gzip-file is 450kb, extracted SQL-file only 590kb and broken half way.

The scheduled backup (Gzipped 435 Kb) is extracted about the same size as the manual backup through PHPMyAdmin: SQL-file = 1590Kb and seems to be OK.

Perhaps a problem with gzip?

All manually triggered backups seem to produce the described (non) result, but the first of my scheduled email backups arrived just arrived and was fine !

I'm using WP 2.1. I just installed the Backup plug in.

Everything's working fine - an ***.sql.gz file is being written on the server, emailed to me if I've chosen that option, or presented to me for download, but they're almost empty:

The process bar runs to 100% and presents a dialogue box to download the file if I've selected that, suggesting the process is being completed.

When I extract and view the backup sql it's as follows:

- but nothing else.

I only have a couple of posts and a single page in the blog so far.
